Stokes Lawrence Appellate Attorneys Argue Back-to-Back Cases

Under unusual circumstances, attorneys from Stokes Lawrence's Appellate practice recently found themselves in back-to-back oral arguments in Division I of the Washington Court of Appeals. In each case, the attorneys were defending a summary judgment won in trusts and estates disputes.

In the first case, Mat Harrington and Joan Hemphill represented an estate against a bank that failed to file a creditor’s claim and forfeited its right to collect on a loan to the decedent. In the other case, Harrington, along with Theresa Wang, represented a trustee of a trust established at the decedent's death. They had successfully obtained a court order that made clear the trust had an interest in certain property, which would eventually revert to a non-profit organization. Rulings on the appeals in both cases are expected in several months.

"After presenting one argument, it was unusual to remain at counsel table when the next case was called," said Harrington. "We look forward to the rulings of the court."
