The Stokes Lawrence insurance law group provides counseling and litigation services to insureds, brokers, and agents in disputes concerning insurance coverage. We have a particular depth of experience in matters involving insurance agents and brokers, having represented wholesale and retail brokers in over 100 matters arising from alleged deficiencies in coverage. We also frequently represent insureds who are contemplating or pursuing claims against insurers. Our work includes litigation of insurance and reinsurance matters in federal and state courts throughout Washington.

Recent Representative Cases

Obtained judgment for Amazon.com against its insurer for litigation costs Amazon.com incurred defending three major patent infringement lawsuits. Amazon.com v. Atlantic Mutual Ins. Co. (W.D. WA 2006).

Represented surplus lines broker sued for allegedly omitting $4.5 million in renewal coverage, obtaining dismissal in bankruptcy court and favorable settlement in state court. Trustee for Wade Cook Fin. Corp. v. Crump Ins. Servs. NW, Inc. (W.D. Wash. 2004).

Obtained dismissal with prejudice of broker for alleged failure to obtain coverage. Monson Fruit Co. v. Marsh Advantage America, et al. (Yakima County Superior Court).

Obtained favorable settlements in multiple cases involving alleged failure to obtain coverage. E.g., Heavy Hauling v. Marsh USA, Inc. (Cowlitz County Superior Court); SP Farms v. Marsh Advantage America (Yakima County Superior Court).

Obtained coverage from construction subcontractor after general contractor’s primary insurer became insolvent. Greenlaw, et al. v. Wellington Lakemont, et al. (King County Superior Court 2004).

Represented reinsurance intermediary in litigation of claims involving intermediary’s alleged failed secure coverage in enforceable retrocessional coverage. Zurich Reinsurance (North America), Inc. v. Connecticut General Life Ins. Co. (King County Superior Court 2002).
