Scott A.W. Johnson
PRACTICE EMPHASIS:
Scott A.W. Johnson has over 20 years experience as a trial lawyer helping clients successfully resolve challenging complex business and commercial disputes in both state and federal courts. Scott also has experience in intellectual property litigation, antitrust and consumer protection, and claims involving fiduciaries.
REPRESENTATIVE CASES:
- Obtained judgment confirming $8.5 million arbitration award for T-Mobile, USA, Inc. against Qwest Corporation for reimbursement of unlawful and improper messaging charges on local telephone calls in violation of the Telecommunications Act of 1996.
- Obtained a favorable jury verdict in federal court for AT&T Wireless Services in an action for patent malpractice that had resulted in the loss of its rights to an important advance in cellphone technology.
- Obtained a judgment after trial in favor of Frontier Bank, the PR of an estate, against claims that the decedent had been in a foreign common law marriage.
- Successfully defended the trustee at trial against claims of undue influence, fraud and breach of trust.
- Advised Claircom, an air-to-ground telecommunications company, in an effective strategy to terminate the service with several major domestic commercial airlines, without breaching its contracts .
- Obtained a preliminary injunction in federal court for Reliable Computers, a developer of computer software and hardware control systems, in an action for trademark and copyright infringement and breach of contract by its exclusive US vendor.
OTHER EXPERIENCE:
Following law school, Scott served as Law Clerk to Senior Circuit Judge Wilson Cowen of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Prior to joining Stokes Lawrence, he practiced with the Seattle law firm Perkins Coie.
ACTIVITIES:
Scott is a member of the Seattle Rotary 4, Rotary International.
Scott serves as a cooperating attorney for the ACLU of Washington and was the counsel of record and author of an amicus brief to the United States Supreme Court for the ACLU and several of its chapters on the constitutionality of civil commitment statutes.
Scott has been active with state and local bar associations, having served as Chair of the Young Lawyers Division of the King County Bar Association and as Trustee of the King County Bar Foundation. He has been a member of the William L. Dwyer Inn of the American Inns of Court.
Scott is the former Chairman of the Board of the Delta Upsilon International Fraternity, Inc., and was a Trustee of the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation, Inc. He currently serves as the President of the Northwest Delta Upsilon Housing Corporation.
Scott served as a director and officer of Washington Ceasefire and the Ceasefire Foundation of Washington, an anti-gun violence education and lobbying group. Scott served on the steering committee for Abused Deaf Women's Advocacy Services' campaign "A Place of Our Own" developing the nation's first transitional housing for deaf victims of domestic violence.
EDUCATION:
Scott obtained his law degree, magna cum laude, from the American University, Washington College of Law in 1985, where he served as Notes and Comments Editor of The American University Law Review. Scott received his B.A. in Business Administration (Accounting) from the University of Washington in 1980.
ADMISSIONS:
Scott is admitted to the Washington State Bar, U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal and Ninth Circuits, U.S. District Courts for the Western and Eastern Districts of Washington, and the U.S. Claims Court.
RECOGNITIONS:
Scott has been recognized as a “Super Lawyer†by WASHINGTON LAW AND POLITICS in 2002-2007. He was recognized by WASHINGTON CEO magazine in its “Justice League†in 2006.
